5 sex positions for people with mobility issues

In this post, we’ll guide you through different sex positions that work well if you're challenged by reduced physical mobility – and offer some tips for you.

There are many sex positions out there. Some are easy to get into, while others require stamina and a good amount of flexibility. But if you have mobility issues due to illness, physical disability, pain or age, not all sex positions are equally comfortable. That's why it's important to find sex positions that are gentle on your body, joints and muscles, but still feel nice and sexy.

Most importantly, remember that the best sex positions in the world are the ones that feel good for you and your partner(s). Good sex is for everyone - no matter what your body is like.

1. Sideways 69

A comfortable position that allows you to give and receive oral sex at the same time.

You may be familiar with the classic 69 positions, but this version is more comfortable because both partners can lie down at the same time and it is more gentle on hips and knees. Therefore, it's less stressful on the body and doesn't require either of you to have the same strength or mobility as the classic 69. Lie on your side, both of you, with your head against each other's genitals. Now you can lick, kiss or stimulate each other with your hands and fingers.

You can also use sex toys if you have mobility issues or just want to spice things up a bit.

2. Customised Missionary

An underrated classic with a pleasurable twist.

One of you lies down on the bed with your butt near the edge. The other person stands up between the legs of the one lying down. The person standing up now lifts the lying person's legs up so that their ankles rest on the standing person's shoulders or on a chair behind the standing person. Now the person standing can stimulate the genitals and anus with fingers, hands, penis or sex toys.

It can be helpful to use a blanket or pillow under the buttocks of the person lying down - both for greater comfort, but also for better stimulation. The Peech sex pillow is angled so that the lower abdomen can be lifted to a comfortable height and relaxes the pelvic floor.

3. Face-to-Face

A perfect position for intimate eye contact during sex.

One of you sits on a chair, bed or wheelchair. The other person puts their arms around the seated person and sits on top. The top person can put their legs on the chair or bed and ride the person sitting down. This person can help stabilise the position by holding the other person's buttocks - and of course use their hands them while doing so. You can use hands, fingers, penis and sex toys to stimulate each other.

If deep penetration hurts, try a buffer ring, such as the Oh Nut buffer ring, which reduces deep thrusting and can be a good warm-up for penetrative anal sex.

4. Sit on my face

One of the most versatile positions for oral sex.

One of you lies on your back. The other person sits on the face of the person lying down and can now move their genitals on the lying person’s face and receive oral sex. The person lying down can kiss, lick and use their hands and fingers to stimulate the person on top. You can also use sex toys to help you and to make it (even) more comfortable - for example, Wander has a great ergonomic handle.

If you both have mobility issues, you can use pillows or a positioning chair that is designed to be placed over one person's mouth and can support the top person.

5. Customised Doggy

A comfortable variation of a hot, familiar position.

One of you sits on a chair at the end of the bed. The other sits on top of the seated person with their head away from the one sitting down and can now ride and be stimulated by the bottom person. The top person can rest their arms and torso on the bed or on a table in front of them. Meanwhile, the bottom person can stimulate the top person with hands, fingers, penis and sex toys.

To make things go more smoothly, it can be a help to use lube during sex - especially if you experience pain, dry mucous membranes or irritation in intimate areas. In general, lube helps reduce friction for both of you. Use a mild lubricant, such as Glide & Slide, preferably fragrance-free, that is gentle but still makes you feel good.

Advice for those with mobility issues

Talk to your partner

Communication is important for having good sex. Talk to your partner about what you'd like to try, but also what your body is limited by. This way you can create a safe space before you have sex and be aware of each other during.

Sex toys are your friend

When you or your partner get tired along the way, sex toys can help keep you going for longer. Consider what will work for you, what should the sex toy be able to do — should it be controlled hands-free, remote controlled or have a good handle to hold? Use a Wander for powerful vibrations on erogenous zones, try a smaller all-round vibrator like Nyx to tease each other and try a penis ring like Loop to keep you erect.

Sex is much more than just penetration

Sex is everything that happens when you have sex with yourself or with your partner(s). Play with the temperature of sex toys like the glass dildo Amber or let the sensory toy Plum glide across your body for a cool, soft sensation. Stimulate the erogenous zones, have finger sex, give a nice massage with oil such as sitres Care & Intimacy Oil, and enjoy intimacy like hugs and kisses. Hold each other close and remember aftercare!

The most important thing when having sex is to always listen to your body and what it can and wants. Sex should be enjoyable and can easily be adapted to you!
