How to find the right size condom

Penises come in all shapes and sizes - and so do condoms. Condoms are not one-size-fits-all. If the condom is too small, it can feel uncomfortable and could break - if it's too big, it can slip off. Read our guide to find out which size condom is best for you

Protect both you and your partner(s) from STIs

It's important to practice safe sex. Apart from dental dams, condoms are the only form of contraception that protects against both STIs and unwanted pregnancy. Contraception is always everyone's responsibility when you want to have sex with each other. However, when you have a penis, it's a good idea to consider what size condoms are suitable for your penis, as the right size will make a big difference when it comes to your pleasure.

How do you find out what size condoms are suitable?

When it comes to condoms, it's not the length but the thickness of the penis that determines the size. Therefore, to find out what size condom you need, you need to measure the circumference of your penis. It's best to measure around the middle of the shaft of your penis when it is erect. The easiest way to measure is to take a piece of string and wrap it around your penis. It should not be too loose or too tight. Then lay the string flat and measure it with a tape measure. You can then use the table below to find the right condom size for you. If the circumference of your penis is between two sizes, choose the smaller of the two, otherwise you risk the condom being too loose and slipping off.

Circumference: 9.5 cm - 10 cm | Size 47
Circumference: 10 cm - 11 cm | Size 49
Circumference: 11 cm - 11.5 cm | Size 53
Circumference: 11.5 cm - 12 cm | Size 57
Circumference: 12 cm - 13 cm | Size 60
Circumference: 13 cm - 14 cm | Size 64
Circumference: 14 cm - 15 cm | Size 69

Most condom brands use the above mentioned size scale, so you should be able to use the table in most instances. However, some brands use the sizes small, medium, large, etc., which is quite misleading and can make it difficult to figure out the exact size that's right for you.

Based on the table above, a general rule of thumb is that size small is anything below size 49, medium is anything between 49 and 57, while large, XL and XXL are 57+. However, you may also be lucky enough to find a circumference measurement on the packages that use that kind of measurement, and then it is the circumference number and not the misleading small, medium, large measurement you need to use.
